The Henry Luce Foundation Awards SBL $50,000 to Support Its International Texts and Traditions Initiative

This grant supports an interdisciplinary initiative across the humanistic study of texts and canons that SBL will launch at the 2022 International Meeting in Salzburg, Austria. The program focuses on contextual, receptive, and productive practices that demonstrably and readily extend beyond biblical scholarship. The program will include themes, contours, and connections in areas such as law, literature, art, and East Asian traditions that intersect with sacralized and culturally privileged texts and their interpretative practices as well as the canons and curricula from which these are formed.

The Society for Classical Studies, the International Qur’anic Studies Association, the Society for Targumic Studies, and the International Association for the History of Religions are among the first collaborators in this initiative.

SBL is grateful for the Luce Foundation’s support of a program that will advance the status of biblical studies in a variety of intellectual, political, social, and cultural contexts.

The Social Groups behind the Pentateuch
Jaeyoung Jeon, editors

The ten essays in this collection advance the discussion of pentateuchal sources and redaction layers by shifting the focus of study from the literary stratification of the texts in Genesis to Deuteronomy to the social, economic, religious, and political agendas behind them. Contributors draw on community groups within and beyond Persian Yehud to the Judahite communities in the diaspora, establishing a proper academic context for placing the diverse voices of the Pentateuch.

Terror in the Bible: Rhetoric, Gender, and Violence
Monica Jyotsna Melanchthon and Robyn J. Whitaker, editors

This volume of essays, inspired by Phyllis Trible’s Texts of Terror, examines the terrorizing potential of biblical texts as they intersect with issues of context, gender, caste, violence, and colonization/imperialism. Contributors writing from Australia, India, New Zealand, Tonga, South Africa, and the US interrogate biblical texts from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament to bring to the fore their terrorizing and terrifying potential and their violent and violating impact particularly on women and minoritized men as they intersect with cultures in their home contexts. A foreword by Phyllis Trible reflects on what motivated her work and how this volume pushes the academy and the church to deal with the violence inherent in some biblical texts.
